The You That I'd Found, The Me That You Had

(The Rarest Kind)

When I wrote this I was thinking about people from my past that I used to be close with but had grown apart from sort of naturally over time.  It's also about recognizing changes within myself as I've gotten older.   I didn't originally intend for it to be a sad sounding song but I guess it kind of turned out that way in the end.  Musically, it's a personal favorite of mine as the song uses an unusual guitar tuning (Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, D) and features some very interesting chord changes and falsetto vocals.

Where is our innocence?
Did we lose it long ago?
It’s clear we’re not the same
We met in a lonely bar
Hit it off and left in my car
We were destination free and we didn’t notice
In the summer we wore our winter clothes
We both loved to be unusual
Everybody must have thought we were strange
But it didn’t matter what they did or said
Nor did the lies in all the books we read
School was just another game that we were playing
It’s a shame how the you that I’d found and the me that you had is gone...
It’s strange how love disappears…
And without any tears along the way...
Where’s the us that I used to know?
The two that were so inseparable…
Is there really nothing to blame?
We had our very own style
Left the crazes in the garbage pile
We believed we could do anything when we were together
It’s a shame how the you that I’d found and the me that you had is gone
It’s strange how love disappears…
And without any tears along the way
Time is just a killer that we can’t control
It’s probably true that we all must grow
But why does that mean love must have to change or fade away?
That night in a lonely bar
We had a few drinks and left in my car
Who would’ve known how much we’d relate
But we lost our bond and I don’t know how
Next time around, let’s say it now
And promise ourselves we won’t ever change
Where is our innocence?
Did we lose it long ago?
It's clear we're not the same
